KKETP— Sponsorship Program Overview
KKETP is located in Khon Kaen, Thailand. We strongly believe in contributing to the community we live in. The sponsorship program was started 5 years ago by Scott and Katt Walker and is now emulated by other organizations. Our program provides free English lessons for children primarily, but also helps motivated adults who are financially challenged.
Specific information regarding the program:
–The student receives 40 hours of instruction delivered over a 2 month period.
–At the beginning, in the middle and at the end of their course, the students do a recorded reading so they can hear for themselves how they have progressed.
–At various points of the course, the students are given an audio CD which is theirs to keep and use at home. These discs, if used regularly, ensure that the students retain the information and skills they acquired during their course.
–Not all students begin a given class at the same level, so the homework assigned is individualistic, and specifically designed to address weak points. This keeps all students challenged and growing.
–No more than 4 students in a class and often one on one lessons are available.
–Though the course is not designed around computers, the kids will get a chance to develop very basic computer skills if they don’t already have them.
–The program also provides 1 and 2 day English camps for rural schools with up to 100 students in attendance!
How will this program benefit the students?
Educationally, this program is vital for less fortunate students to have a fighting chance for entrance to a University. An English test is part of the entrance exam for all Thai Universities. Vocationally, this program opens the door for students who wish to work in the huge tourism industry here, where English language skills are essential. Also, this program assists anyone who wants to be an English teacher (ALL Thai schools have Thai teachers who teach English). Additionally, many Thai people who want to work or study abroad need English language skills to qualify for visas to visit English speaking countries.
